Who was Paul Tetar van Elven? About his inheritance ...
Paul Tetar van Elven (1823-1896) was a painter and teacher in free-hand drawing at the Polytechnical School, the predecessor of the Technical University Delft. After his education in Amsterdam and The Hague he produced mainly portraits, history paintings and copies of old masters. From 1864 till 1894 he lived in this pretty canal-house on the Koornmarkt (Corn Market), that he left with its contents to the town. Apart from his own work, such as a rare collection of copies painted by him, one finds work by contemporaries, antique furniture, oriental porcelain and Delft earthenware. Thanks to the authentic interior this museum figures on the list of the hundred best preserved interiors in The Netherlands. This museum has always been under the supervision of a private foundation.
